Olivia: "We've been through so much together, Spencer. I don't want to throw all of that away. We can figure this out. We always do."
Spencer: "I know, but it feels like we've been forcing it lately. I love you, Liv, but it feels like we're growing in different directions. I don't want to keep hurting each other."
Olivia: "I love you too, but we don't have to break up. We can work through this. We just need to find our way back to each other."
Spencer: "I wish it was that simple, but right now, I don't even know who I am without football, and I can't keep dragging you into that confusion. I think we both need time to figure ourselves out."
Olivia: "So, what? You're just gonna walk away? After everything?"
Spencer: "I'm not walking away from you. I'm just saying we need some space to breathe, to grow. Maybe after some time apart, we'll find our way back to each other, but right now, I just don't see how we keep going like this."
Olivia: "Our love story is not over."
In All American Season 4, Episode 18, titled "Came Back for You," Olivia and Spencer have a critical conversation about their relationship. This scene is a turning point in their relationship, showing the emotional complexity of their bond and the difficult decision to prioritize individual growth over staying together.
Life is full of moments when we must part ways with people we care about. These goodbyes can be tough, leaving us with a sense of loss, uncertainty, and sadness. However, I’ve come to realize that there is a difference between saying goodbye and saying, “See you soon.” The latter carries a sense of hope, a promise of reunion, and an acknowledgment that our connection doesn’t end just because we are apart.
When I think back to the times I’ve had to say “goodbye” to people I love, I remember the knot in my stomach, the heaviness in my chest, and the lingering sadness that often followed. Whether it was a close friend moving to another city, a family member leaving after a visit, or even saying farewell to a place I’d grown attached to, each goodbye felt like a chapter closing—a part of my life that I would never get back.
But over time, I learned that not every parting has to be a farewell in the final sense. There’s something powerful in changing our perspective from “goodbye” to “see you soon.” It’s a small shift in language, but it makes all the difference. It allows us to hold onto the connection, to keep it alive in our hearts and minds, and to look forward to the next time we can be together.
The phrase “Not a goodbye. Just a see you soon” is a reminder that our connections with others transcend time and distance. It’s about perspective—choosing to see the departure as temporary rather than permanent. This mindset shift allows us to focus on the positive aspects of the relationship, rather than dwelling on the sadness of the separation.
When we part ways with someone, it’s easy to get caught up in the finality of the moment. We might feel like we’re losing something or someone important to us. But by telling ourselves and the other person, “See you soon,” we’re choosing to believe in the continuity of the relationship. We’re acknowledging that even though we may not be physically together, our bond remains intact. It’s a way of saying that this is just a pause, not an end.
Saying “See you soon” is also an assurance. It’s a commitment to reconnect, to find each other again, and to continue the relationship where it left off. This promise can bring comfort and peace, especially in situations where the separation is beyond our control. Whether it’s due to distance, time, or life circumstances, knowing that we will see each other again can help us cope with the temporary loss.
As I write this, I am reminiscing on the moments I shared with a special somebody’s daughter. This year, 2024, ensured we met. Our meeting might have been demure but with time it became divine. She is leaving. Moving abroad for work. The last time we met, we spent hours together, sharing our dreams, fear, and everything in between. The thought of her leaving was heartbreaking, and I struggled to find the right words to express how much I would miss her.
But then, instead of saying goodbye, I told her, “This isn’t a goodbye. It’s just a see you soon.” In that moment, I realized that our friendship wasn’t ending—it was simply entering a new phase. We promised to stay in touch, to visit each other when we could, and to keep our bond alive despite the distance. That simple phrase, “See you soon,” made all the difference. It turned what could have been a painful farewell into a hopeful assurance of future reunions.
In parting words, no tears to drown, Not a goodbye, just a see you soon. The paths may split, but hearts remain, In memories sweet, we'll meet again. Distance fades in the light of the moon, Not a farewell, just a see you soon. Until we reunite beneath the same sky, Our bond persists, no need for goodbye.
One of the hardest parts of saying goodbye is the fear of losing the connection we have with someone. We worry that time and distance will weaken the bond, that we’ll drift apart, or that the relationship will fade into a distant memory. But by saying “See you soon,” we’re actively choosing to hold onto that connection. We’re making a conscious effort to keep the relationship alive, even when we’re apart.
In today’s world, staying connected is easier than ever. With technology, we can keep in touch with loved ones no matter where they are in the world. Video calls, messages, and social media make it possible to share our lives with each other, even from afar. When we say “See you soon,” we’re embracing these tools and finding ways to maintain the closeness, even when we can’t be physically present.
Life is a journey, full of twists, turns, and unexpected detours. Along the way, we meet people who leave a lasting impact on our hearts. Some of them will walk with us for a long time, while others may only join us for a short part of the journey. But every connection, no matter how brief, has value.
When we say “Not a goodbye. Just a see you soon,” we’re acknowledging that our paths may diverge, but that doesn’t diminish the significance of the time we’ve shared. It’s an acceptance that life is constantly changing, and that’s okay. We can cherish the memories, look forward to future reunions, and trust that the people who are meant to be in our lives will find their way back to us.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand that goodbyes are a natural part of life. But I’ve also learned that they don’t have to be final. By shifting our perspective and embracing the idea of “Not a goodbye. Just a see you soon,” we can find comfort in the connections we’ve built and the knowledge that, no matter where life takes us, we can always find our way back to the people and places we love. It’s a reminder that distance is only temporary, and that true bonds are never truly broken.
